Thomson Delmar Learning's quarterly online newsletter, What’s Happening in Medical Assisting , provides timely news stories, tips and features to Medical Assistants, Medical Assisting instructors, and Medical Assisting students.
Readers are encouraged to submit their ideas for possible publication in our online newsletter.
What types of stories are needed?
We accept submissions of the following:
News and Noteworthy Events – For a news story to be accepted it should have national implications. Local or regional stories are generally not accepted.
Medical Assisting Tips – Usually very brief, Medical Assisting Tips share the expertise of experienced Medical Assistants. Medical Assisting Tips may be supported with illustrations and may be several paragraphs, if necessary.
Teaching Tips – Teaching tools or tips that may be shared with others are the topic of Teaching Tips. Illustrations or links to downloadable handouts are sometimes used.
Feature Article – Feature articles are typically 500 - 1,000 words and provide insight into a clinical or administrative aspect of Medical Assisting. Photos, illustrations, or graphics may be used to illustrate a point.
How do I submit to the newsletter?
Submission may be in one of two ways:
Query Letter
Submit the following by mail or email:

A cover letter outlining the idea and why you are qualified to write it.

A current copy of your resume or curriculum vita.

How quickly you can produce the article.
Manuscript Submission
Submit the following by mail or email:
- A copy of the manuscript. Any references to outside sources must be noted.
- A current copy of your resume or curriculum vita.
- Complete contact information including email address.
How will I know if my submission is chosen?
If your submission is chosen you will be contacted by the newsletter editor who will offer a contract for your work. Payment, deadline, and legal terms will be discussed at that time.
How much payment will I receive for my submission?
Payment is based on the length and complexity of the submission. Typical payment rates are as follows:
Feature article $150 - $250
News story $ 25
Teaching tips $ 25-75
Street tips $ 25-75
When will I be paid for my submission?
Please allow 60 days after receipt of your signed contract and your work for payment to be processed.

Barbara has been working in the medical assisting profession since 1975 with 15 years experience as an educator. She teaches clinical courses including anatomy and physiology, pathology, microbiology and nutrition. She gives presentations throughout Washington and Oregon on a variety of topics in the clinical, administrative and transdisciplinary areas to medical assisting groups, insurance coding groups, and other health care professionals. She recently co-authored a well-respected comprehensive medical assisting textbook.
