Update from Disaster Task Force Chair
Jenna Sanders

Greetings NSNA members,

As we commemorate the second anniversary of the Katrina Disaster, NSNA’s Disaster Task Force wanted to bring you an update on the Disaster Relief Survey Project.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the 1,351 students who responded to our survey.  Through your participation, we gathered thousands of pages of data related to disaster relief efforts, preparedness and response.  Data analysis is nearing completion, and the findings have been very educational.  The data has been used to help guide the formation of the Guidelines for Establishing and Implementing Disaster Preparedness, Recovery, and Relief Projects, which we are very much looking forward to releasing at our MidYear Conference in Kansas City, MO, in November.

The full data from the survey will be published upon completion, and we will make certain you are kept aware of how to access all findings.  This will prove to be an historic project for NSNA and our members, guiding disaster preparation for students across the country.  We are honored to be a part of this project.

Louisiana and surrounding states touched by Katrina are still suffering two years later.  Even as students, we have the power to make a difference: by enhancing disaster preparedness at the community level; by working with legislators to ensure adequate disaster response and resources at the governance level; and by helping in disaster areas post-event at the world level.  The key is preparation, training and communication.  We encourage everyone to become Red Cross and/or NIMS (National Incident Management System) certified prior to a disaster.  In our survey, 56% of respondents stated that they did not have a personal disaster preparedness plan.  From now until MidYear, we challenge you to visit the Red Cross website, and research training and certification programs as well as information on disaster preparedness at your home.  We look forward to hearing about your progress in Kansas City!

Please feel free to e-mail me at any time should you have questions.  NSNAVicePresident@gmail.com

Run for Office Update from the NEC

NSNA Leadership:  Seek the Adventure—Transform your Journey
Run for 2008-09 National Office!

We are pleased to announce that our new year is now underway. School is starting again and the Nominating and Elections Committee (NEC) is now working at full steam. We are so excited for what is to come! This year we are asking for your help. There are four members on the NEC – not nearly enough to recruit all of those wonderfully talented individuals that we know exist out there. You do have that power, however. We want you to look inside yourselves to see if you think you have what it takes to become one of tomorrow’s NSNA Leaders. We also want you to encourage others you know to follow the road less traveled and accept the challenge of running for NSNA office!

We want you to know about the benefits of preslating for office. Since the deadline is January 8, 2008, which is much earlier this year, preslating will put you at a serious advantage.  As a preslated candidate, you have the opportunity to be properly credentialed, campaign prior to Convention, and arrive in Grapevine, TX thoroughly prepared and ready for your time to shine in the spotlight! With the deadline for the applications being much earlier this year, we want you to have all of the information you need in order for you to make your decision. We are currently working on adapting our website to accommodate you with all the necessary information needed to run, but until our website is complete, here is an option to get you started.

Visit the NSNA web site at www.nsna.org for information, including roles and responsibilities for NSNA elected officials (located under the Elected Officials tab) and see if any of the positions may serve as stepping stones in your path to the wonderful world of nursing!

Also please feel free to contact any of the NEC members at anytime and we will be more than happy to answer any of your questions about running for office, or give you any additional information.
