Classroom Tips & Tricks for Instructors

Building camaraderie among classmates is an important step toward fostering teamwork in the EMS classroom. To accelerate this process, use an ice breaker activity. For paramedic students, instructors may use a checklist designed to encourage students to talk about their EMS experiences with other students. Each student should introduce themselves to their fellow peers and ask them if they have completed any of the suggested activities on the checklist.
For example, a student would introduce herself and then ask another student about an item on the checklist: “Have you worked in EMS for more than five years?” If the student answers yes, he would sign the checklist next to that item. If he answers no, the questioner would encourage him to discuss another activity on the checklist that he has performed. The questioner then moves on to another student. The activity continues until each student has obtained a signature for each activity or until time permits.
