Poster Presentations
Critical thinking and the ability to speak to and defend science are skills critical to the pre-hospital practitioner of the 21st century. To facilitate this process, students may be assigned poster presentations. Poster presentations give students the opportunity to research a topic, work independently or collaboratively as the situation demands, and to further investigate a subject.

The process is simple. Poster presentations are assigned on a specific topic that will be studied later in the term. Students are asked to create a static display on one standard sheet of poster board and be prepared to discuss their topic at length. At the appropriate time in the term, posters are hung around the classroom. Using their poster as a visual aid, students are given the opportunity to make a presentation on their topic and other students are encouraged to ask questions and interact with the presenter. Guests may be invited to attend the presentation and interact with the students. After presentations are over, the posters may be displayed in the classroom and, when appropriate, placed in affiliated health care facilities.

Besides the obvious value of encouraging students to investigate a topic in depth, additional value is gained by engaging each student—even the quiet ones—in a conversation with the rest of the students and instructors. It further gives them the opportunity to use:

1. Research skills (five references are required)
2. Computer skills
3. Public speaking and communication
4. Creativity
5. Grammar, writing, and spelling
6. Critical-thinking skills

While poster presentations may seem like a trivial part of a student’s program of study, the skills developed in the process may have significant and long-lasting effects.
