Watch
From time to time, legislation of particular
interest to emergency personnel is introduced on Capitol Hill. Emergency
services personnel should be aware of legislation that affects them
and, when necessary, take action to inform their representatives
in Washington of their support of or opposition to certain legislation.

2014 Medicare Ambulance Payment Reform and Rural Equity Act of 2005
On April 28, 2005 a bipartisan bill was introduced in the U. S.
House of Representatives that would increase federal fees for rural
emergency service providers.
National
Registry Announces Computer Based Testing
The National Registry of EMTs has announced
that it will begin testing by computer in January 2007. According
to the NREMT, the new system of testing will give candidates more
flexibility in testing and will allow them to receive their results
the day after they take the test.

Drug Labs Making Crystal Methamphetamine
You
respond to an “unknown medical” call to a suburban residence. Upon
arrival an elderly female, Mrs. Nived meets you at the ambulance.
She explains that the call is actually for her neighbors, located
just across the street. She tells you that there has been a great
deal of traffic in and out of the house lately. “Someone will drive
up and honk the horn,” she says, “and one of the men will come out
of the house and go to their car window.” Visits never last more
than a few minutes and visitors rarely, if ever, get out of the
car.

Veteran
EMS instructors have likely seen EMT-B students overwhelmed
from information overload. Some students are absolutely astounded
at the bulk of information contained in a basic EMT course,
mistakenly thinking it could not be too much more difficult
than the first aid course they took somewhere several years
ago. As instructors, we should seek instructional methods
that help to alleviate information overload as much as possible.
