Teachback

If you have taught in EMS for any period of time you have likely seen the look—that glazed-over look in the eyes of your students that tells you it is time to change gears to keep your students engaged and enthused. One method to do so is allowing students to teach predetermined sections of the curriculum.

The process is simple. Assign students to teach a short segment of an upcoming class, giving them the necessary resources to prepare their presentation. This method is effective in that it encourages students to delve deeper into the curriculum while using their creativity to present the material.

As instructor, your role is to assure that the curriculum is adequately covered and that the presentation is appropriate. You should also serve as a resource during the preparation phase and be prepared to step in if the student is unable to adequately present the material. It is likely that you will be amazed by the creativity and quality of your students’ presentations.
