2006 Thomson Delmar Learning Medical Assisting Advisory Board
By Sarah Duncan

The Medical Assisting Advisory Board is an annual interactive forum for program directors and educators involved with medical assisting. It’s designed to be an opportunity to network and share ideas about the trends and issues impacting education and the future of the profession.

Individuals from over 60 institutions attended this year to participate in breakout sessions, network with other educators and key players, and hear speakers talk about relevant topics in medical assisting and health care.

This year, we featured more speakers than ever before. Our speakers explored medical assistant careers and professional advancement, discussed trends in education such as E-Learning and Electronic Medical Records.

Breakout groups engaged participants in discussing trends in Medical Assisting and Health Care education. Many of our current materials and technology solutions have been created as a direct result of feedback from prior breakout sessions at past advisory board meetings.

Accreditation Sessions
Representatives from the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Curriculum Review Board (AAMA CRB) addressed standards in accreditation and fielded questions from the group.

More Than Just a Meeting
This year our Advisory Board met at the historic Gideon Putnam hotel in Saratoga Springs, New York on May 17-19.

Beyond this great opportunity for Medical Assisting professionals to gain new information, it allowed for ways to engage, interact, gather & share new ideas, and walk away feeling energized about their field.

Input from our Medical Assisting customers doesn’t end at the Advisory Board meeting. We call on our members year-round to provide input on many Thomson Delmar Learning initiatives and many of our attendees serve as reviewers and authors.
