Over 50% of all salons in the region hit by Hurricane Katrina have been completely destroyed. The Beauty Industry wants to help them rebuild.
The level of financial devastation to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama can hardly be understood without having gone through it. Salon Industry Associations have formed an alliance to aid salons affected by Hurricane Katrina. Associations including the National Cosmetology Association (NCA), the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), the Salon Association (TSA), the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), the International Chain Salon Association (ICSA), and the National Beauty Culturists' League (NBCL) have joined forces to create Beauty Associations for Katrina Relief www.probeautycares.org with the following purposes in mind:
- To raise $5 million for the long-term aid of salon owners and professionals, distributors, manufacturers, beauty schools and students, plus others in the salon industry affected by Hurricane Katrina.
To help rebuild the salon industry in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.
- To work with government and regulatory agencies to ensure opportunity for employment and license reciprocity for those displaced by Katrina.
The participating associations that understand the immediate needs of displaced professionals are critical. Social service and government agencies are working to bring immediate relief and the beauty associations encourage support of these agencies.
However, the associations realize a long-term need to help re-establish businesses and careers in the devastated areas will become more critical over the next months. It is this rebuilding phase where the associations believe the salon industry can truly help the most. To date, associations have worked in alliance to accomplish the following:
- A website — www.probeautycares.org — will provide information on the associations’ efforts and links to other appropriate relief organizations and the work of industry companies and groups.
- A toll-free telephone number (877-315-0743) is available for salons affected and those wanting more information on how to help the efforts.
- An advertisement and creative materials were designed to reach out to the industry and solicit funds and other support. These materials will be available on the www.probeautycares.org Web site.
- A job referral listing for displaced professionals and salons able to help is located at www.katrinajobrelief.com.
Sam Brocato, Chairperson for this organization, sends this message:
“Our sole goal is to make this region of our country, and the hard working salon professionals in it, once again, able to provide the vital beauty services upon which their clients and customers depend, and truly need now more than ever. We thank you for whatever support you can give.”
